To succeed the 993 Turbo, the new Porsche 911 Turbo type 996 was presented in 1999 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, instantly attracting the public.
What an arrival! The Porsche 996 Turbo was the unattainable dream model. Even today, the 911 Turbo represents the ideal model that many would like to afford.
The Porsche 996 Turbo has the 3.6 liter flat six cylinder and 420 hp at 6000 rpm. This 3.6 liter, the Turbo borrows from the Porsche GT3, the base of which comes from the 911 GT1.
It comes with a six-speed manual gearbox, but some owners chose the five-speed Tiptronic S, an option at the time.
The Turbo naturally has firmer suspensions than the other 996s and is lowered by 10 mm. Weighing 1,540 kg, the supercharged Porsche has brakes with four-piston calipers measuring 330 mm in diameter, larger than on the naturally aspirated models.
Aesthetically, the headlights of this 911 Turbo have a different shape while the shield is equipped with three large air inlets. The rear fenders are widened by a total of 65mm and each feature an inlet to the engine. The 18-inch rims are specific to the Turbo, as is its discreet spoiler. The latter has the particularity of dividing in two automatically above 120 km/h since only the upper part rises.
As tradition dictates, the Porsche 911 Turbo has high-end equipment. As proof, it has metallic paint, full leather upholstery, electrically adjustable seats and a specific three-spoke steering wheel with colored Porsche badge as standard.
If you have a big heart and you are able to stay united, foot to the floor, until the red zone, i.e. more than 310 km/h on the speedometer, you will notice that when passing 5500 rpm, the sound is less turbocharged and looks exactly like the flat six atmo of the GT3, but quieter. The running silence is indeed one of the great qualities of the 996 Turbo as well as its comfort.
To shake it up a little, it’s better to deactivate the PSM which allows the 996 Turbo to offer all its generosity. It has a lot to offer, you still have to take it in hand. On small roads, it will stay in its comfort zone until you get what’s in it out of it. But his favorite playground is wide roads and long, fast curves. At that moment, it brings out all its power and efficiency, well placed on its supports.
The model presented dates from 2002 with a low mileage of 113,500 km, equipped with the Tiptronic automatic gearbox which only impacts the top speed by a few km/h, increasing it from 305 to 297 km/h, so to speak. , imperceptible.
Delivered new in Germany, it has its up-to-date service book.
This is a beautiful model which revealed no major defects during our expertise and driving tests.
A few minor marks here and there on the bodywork. but nothing more.
The Porsche 996 Turbo represents the opportunity to join the 911 family with Turbo engines at a still affordable price, …for how long?
