Porsche 356 A 1959

Although Ferdinand Porsche founded his automobile design office in the early 1930s, his name did not appear on a car until 1949.
When it did, it adorned one of the greatest sports cars of all time, the Porsche 356. Designed by Ferry Porsche, the 356 was based on the Volkswagen imagined by his father, Ferdinand, and, like the immortal ” Beetle”, it used a platform chassis with a rear air-cooled engine and independent torsion bar suspension.
Production began with a small series of aluminum-bodied cars built in Gmünd and continued in larger quantities with a steel-bodied 356 coupe manufactured at its former headquarters in Stuttgart, initially in premises shared with the coachbuilder Reutter, then, from 1955, in its original factory in Zuffenhausen.

In 1951, a works car finished first in the 1100 cc class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, beginning a long and glorious connection with Sarthe.
The first modifications saw the engine capacity of the 356 increase to 1.3 liters, then 1.5 liters, the original two-piece windscreen was replaced by a single piece and a synchronized gearbox was adopted. .
The redesigned 356 A arrived in 1955, distinguished by its curved windshield and its wheels lowered from 16 to 15 inches. At the same time, a 1600 cc engine replaced the old 1500 and was fitted as standard on its successor, the 356 B.
The model presented dates from 1959, it was delivered new to California where it remained the property of the same person until the current owner purchased it.
Although in working order, he opted for a complete restoration according to the rules of the art.
This is how the work began in 2009, they were able to realize when stripping that it was still adorned with its first painting which attested to the very high quality of this model and the care that had been given to it during all these decades.
The result is this exceptional Porsche 356 A obviously matching numbers restored with scrupulous respect for the origin.
It is also accompanied by an important historical file.
