In September 1953, the importer in the United States of Daimler-Benz, Max Hoffman, managed to convince the parent company in Stuttgart, to bank on the design of two new models of real sports cars taken from the very sporty 300 SL coupé (gullwing), who, winning the Carrera Panamericana, got very special attention from the Americans.
In addition, Hoffman wanted to complete a Mercedes-Benz range that had been very conservative until then. For this, the parent company, in collaboration with its American subsidiary, decided to create two convertibles, a convertible version of the 300SL gullwing and a smaller version, the 190SL, called “sports tourism” in order to offer “a use practical daily life.
The 190 SL presented here is a 1956 model, completely restored to a very high standard in 2008.
At the time of the restoration it was decided to replace the original engine which was broken with a more modern and more powerful model.
The choice fell on a Mercedes 190 block from the 80s, a nod to the model of the same name, it was devoid of its injection in favor of two Weber carburettors so as not to distort the very essence of this model. ancient.
