The idea of creating a vehicle to replace the Traction 15/six dates back to 1938. We know what happened in 1940, so the project was not revived until 1946. It was called the VGD for Voiture de Grande Diffusion. Three men, Lefebvre, Magès and Bertoni, turned this daydream into the wildest of adventures. Two engineers and a designer.
As it appeared at the Paris Motor Show in October 1955, the DS was like a bomb, as if it had travelled through a time portal from the future.
On the morning of 5 October 1955, there was a rush on the stand, with orders pouring in: 749 in 45 minutes, 12,000 by the end of the day and 80,000 cars sold by the end of the show! It was a madness that allowed Citroën to fill its order books for 2 years!
At the time, despite the deposit, you had to be patient… and contrary to legend, the first DS 19s rolled off the production line at high speed. From year to year, from red hydraulic fluid to green hydraulic fluid, the DS continued its career.
The car on display was delivered new in February 1973 to Neuchâtel in Switzerland by the Citroën dealership of Mr Crescia, father of the world-famous Vincent Crescia, renowned for his restoration of Citroën DS.
The owner was none other than the Crescia family lawyer, whose law office was in Rome.
Following the death of its owner, Vincent Crescia decided to buy the famous DS with the bumpers fitted with holes that showed the presence of the very expensive airco option, THE car delivered by his father several years earlier with the intention of restoring it one day.
The opportunity to own a one-owner DS with only 66,000 original km, delivered new by his father, was exceptional.
As the garage remained busy and restoration projects for customers multiplied, the project to restore the DS 23 with carburetor was constantly postponed…
It was several years later that the current owner of this DS persuaded Vincent Crescia to sell it to him and restore it to perfect original condition.
The work began and lasted 3 years, at a cost of over €100,000. The result is a Citroën DS 23 in a condition worthy of the most demanding competitions, restored by the world’s most renowned DS restorer.
A file of almost 100 photos documents the in-depth restoration of this car with scrupulous respect for the original.
This is certainly the most beautiful Citroën DS 23 with carburettor currently available.
