Alpina became a full-fledged car manufacturer in 1983, originally as a tuner for BMW. Given the quality of its first carburetion kits, the Bavarian firm initially decided to retain its manufacturer’s warranty on cars fitted with Alpina kits. The small Buchloe-based tuner then made its racing debut, with drivers including Derek Bell, James Hunt, Niki Lauda and Jacky Ickx… no less! It was in 1971 that Alpina and BMW began working together in earnest to design the 3.0CS, which went on to become the CSL, and which would go on to win numerous competition awards.
In 1978, Alpina turned its attention to the preparation of BMW models. From the 3 Series to the 6 Series, all will have their own inflated version, recognizable by its twenty-spoke rims. The BMW 5 Series is no exception, especially the E39 generation. It will of course be prepared with a 6-cylinder engine, but also with a V8. This version will be known as the B10 V8.
The example we’re presenting is one of the very first produced, dating from 1997, the year in which the B10 V8 appeared. It left the factory in December 1997, bearing the number *201. It is painted in “Alpina Blue II” with gold trim. True to the top-of-the-range BMWs of the time, it is equipped with the Switchtronic gearbox, with the gear buttons located behind the steering wheel. Sold new in Japan, the car was then imported to Europe and is now registered in Luxembourg. With just 49,114 kilometers on the odometer, it’s probably the lowest-mileage car on the market. The Alpina-stitched leathers are in excellent condition. The mechanics work well, and the purr of the V8 will accompany your sporty drives or long freeway journeys.
